Live in the beautiful South End – er, I mean Roxbury

Do you live in a “hot” neighborhood? Are you sure?

What if you suddenly found out you lived in a completely different neighborhood? Would you be annoyed? Scared? Angry?

People say they live in the “South End” but, if they live on Mass Ave, or to the west of it, they are really in “Roxbury”, at least according to historical boundaries. The ZIP code for parts of the South End, closest to Back Bay, is 02116, and your mail will read “Boston”. The ZIP code for south of Tremont Street is 02118, and your mail will read “Roxbury”.

This can totally freak out people.

Freak them out so much that they sue.

This happened in New Jersey:

A three-judge state appeals court recently declared that a New Jersey couple may sue a real estate agency that allegedly incorrectly assured them their newly built, $740,000 house was in a particular community. Nobody disputes that the home is in Montville Township, New Jersey; the problem is, it’s not in the section called Montville, but in a neighboring community.

Of course, the whole thing is kind of silly, isn’t it? Your home is where it is, no name can change that. Plus, in Boston, at least, neighborhoods have no defined boundaries – it’s not like Roxbury has its own mayor or anything, right?

    I once lived in Egleston Square, which is a part of Roxbury on the border of Jamaica

    Plain. One of my housemates went on for some months giving out Jamaica Plain (and, I believe, the

    JP zip code) as part fo her address, even though this meant delays in her mail getting to her. I

    wonder if she felt suddenly less cool when admitted that she was in Roxbury.

    The answer is yes and no. The city recognizes various

    civic associations which have defined boundaries: for example, Columbia/Savin Hill in Dorchester

    has a great deal of say about development which goes on within its boundaries. Furthermore, the

    old town boundaries are still recognized in a variety of ways, but they get fuzzy around the edges.

    The area between Mass Ave and Melnea Cass is one of these fuzzy areas.

    When making

    distinctions between a location being in the South End or Roxbury it seems to break down this way:

    if it is a $600,000 condo, it is in the South End. If it is a guy getting shot, it is Roxbury.

    South End doesn’t even really exist. It was invented by

    realtors to get higher prices for property. It’s ROXBURY. Get real.

    That

    would come as a surprise to Robert Woods, head of the South End House, who published a book about

    the South End in 1898. People from Roxbury would have referred to the South End as the “Neck” in

    the early days of Boston. What we think of as the South End was never part of Roxbury..
