Menino proposes selling City Hall

DEVELOPING …

Mayor proposes selling city hall – By Thomas C. Palmer, Jr. and Chris Reidy, The Boston Globe

Mayor Thomas M. Menino proposed in a morning speech today to sell the current City Hall and City Hall Plaza to private developers and relocate the seat of city government to Drydock Four on the South Boston (sic) Waterfront.

Menino explored a possible sale of City Hall in 1998. Now he’s proposing a sale again as part of a plan that would bring an iconic, new City Hall structure to Drydock Four, the current site of the Bank of America Pavilion.

“The market value of City Hall and City Hall Plaza will attract sufficient revenue to construct a new seat for city government,” Menino said in his speech.

(Um, if everyone can agree to call it the “Seaport District” and not “South Boston Waterfront”, I’m on board.)

I guess that would be one way to get real public

transport out there. Because the current Silver Line just wouldn’t cut it. Also, after

Harpoonfest, you wouldn’t have far to go t pay your drunk-n-disorderly tix. I see only upside.

I see only downside. Don’t let the mayor suck you

into another taxpayer funded boondoggle! Sure the project will be advertised as “at no

additional charge to taxpayers because the value of the Government Center site will be used to

fund a new building in the Seaport. The only problem is that what the city builds will cost a lot

more than what Government Center is worth. We taxpayers will have to make up the difference.
