Changing times demand changing direction?

Ha ha.

Many people who read this blog rent and don’t own. These people are called “renters”.

It just occurred to me that I should do a couple posts about all the new rental buildings going up around Boston and talk about what it’s like to rent in the city.

I’m sure I’d find a lot of college kids are interested in reading about it, and I love college kids.

Would be useful for those who are on the fence

deciding if we should sell or rent our current properties, and rent or buy our next

    property.

    Good blog John!

I don’t know if college kids can

afford the rents in those towers downtown. Don’t most of them just rent a 4 bedroom in Allston

for $2000 then pay $500 apiece?

    try $3300-3500 or you’re living with 8, 2

    to a room…

Prices in Allston are on the upswing, like everywhere else around the city.

    2 years ago I was paying $700 for a small 2 bedroom (without Heat/Gas & anything resembling

wall insulation). And that was even a so-so place. There’s a lot of places that are absolute

dumps out there, not even really sure how they can pass inspection, but still go in the $600-700

    month range.

    Southie’s no better.

The only thing keeping me from buying is a down

payent, which is going to need to be rather large for southie.

Cheap rent isn’t to be found

in this city, unless you want to move to blue hill avenue.

    As a

renter I wouldn’t mind seeing a post or two. However the new developments are sort of beyond my

means. I am happy in the North End in an old building with pretty cheap rent.

    There are

bargains to be had, though admittedly for crappy places or dense arrangements… I know people in

    Allston/Brighton paying $450-$550.

    I didn’t

realize average rents were up that high. I’m just quoting the price of a buddy of mine who lives

on Commonwealth near the Super 88. That’s what he paid last year.

information on rentals would be really useful. I’m

still in the process of saving up a down payment and will probably continue renting for the next

    few years.

I live in Fenway on Boylston St.

near Mass Ave. I live in a 2 bed split (2 bedroom apartment with the living room used as a 3rd

bedroom) with 2 other guys and each of us pays $700/mo each for rent. I have lived there for the

    past 5 years.

I am getting married in December and my future wife and I will be getting a 1

bed in Waltham for $900/mo., so my rent will go down to $450/mo for me.

    Scott:

You’re splitting the rent w/your wife? That’s a disaster waiting to happen! The divorce rate is

SIGNIFICANTLY higher for married couples who don’t combine their finances than for those who do

    the “1 pot method”
