   I always thought they should start by just breaking up the concrete and

   putting in grass.. like now!

   Imagine the difference, if instead of a sea of brick and

   concrete, you had these things called “paths” and “greenways”…

   I really do have to wonder

   how any architect ever thought people would love the that thing they call a plaza….

   So, just so we’re clear, they’re proposing to triple the height of Center

   Plaza, tear down every building on the north side of State St from Surface Road to Merchants Row,

   replace the last vestige of Boston’s historic streets and buildings (between Union and Blackstone)

   with cookie cutter high-rises, replace an Artery vent building with high-rises, and make the plaza

   even larger and more windswept. In fact, it would appear they are calling for every structure in

   the vicinity of City Hall to be demolished except… City Hall (and the JFK high-rise and 28/60

   State), the one building pretty much every non-architect would want to see demolished. Other than

   that, it’s a totally workable plan.

   Personally, I think City Hall should stay downtown,

   accessible to all subway lines. There is plenty of room at the plaza to build a new city hall,

   create a functional open space, and still turn a profit for the gov’t by selling off the rest for

   private development.

   Architects need to get it through their heads that they are not pure

   artists. If somebody paints something that looks like crap, who cares? You don’t have to look at

   it. If architects put up a ridiculous, depressing, inefficient, non-functional building, the rest

   of are stuck using/seeing/loathing said building for the next 40 years. I understand the artistic

   desire to innovate and create new designs, but for the love of God, whatever happened to “form

   follows function”?
