Hi John,

I’m stuck and I’m hoping you might be able to answer a question I feel terrible asking. I may be relocating to Boston. My husband is considering a job up there but we’re unsure about the area. We keep hearing comments that the Boston community is not “friendly” to outsiders and that’s it’s very difficult to fit in. Do you have any feedback? We have visited once and thought the area was beautiful. I appreciate your help!

    Hey, Boston has a reputation for being unfriendly and cold. And it’s

    true. I’ve lived here for 20+ years and still marvel at how UNFRIENDLY Boston is. I lived in NYC

    for awhile and it is infinitely more friendly than Boston…. which amazes some people. There is

    NO COMPARISON.

    I totally understand it…. I’m originally from the midwest, and when I

    travel… even though I’ve lived here half of my life, I tell people I’m from Iowa… Why?

    Because if I say I’m from Boston, it usually elicits a scowl. We HAVE a reputation. I’ve only

    determined it must be something in the water….

    That’s stupid.

    My sister and Dad were visiting last week and they were AMAZED at how friendly people were. Every

    time they pulled out a map in downtown Boston someone came over (even in busy North Station!) to

    ask them if they needed any help, heck one person even offered to take photos of them!!!

    I think it depends on where in the metro area you are…

    smaller towns are always more provincial. Maybe wealthier towns are a little snootier, but aren’t

    they always? I’ve lived in Fenway/Kenmore, Roxbury Crossing, and the North End, and found people

    to be friendly in all. And for my part, I always try to ask tourists if they need help or

    directions, since Boston can be a confusing place to get around.

    This is a very friendly city and the South End (where I live) is a great

    neighborhood. I know everyone on my block and most of the business owners and shopkeepers in a

    1/4-1/2 mile radius. I think sometimes people tend to be a bit insular, but they are definitely not

    rude or cold.

    came closest. I just moved from one “fashionable” South Shore town to one a bit less prestigious. I

    have met more neighbors in 2 months than I did in 20+ years in the old town. The atmosphere of a

    city is a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you want it to be friendly, it will be. (I resisted the urge

    to post “tell her to go f*** herself”. See, we’re friendlier already!)
