Boston again on most-walkable-cities list

Well, Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, actually.

An analyst at The Brookings Institution has ranked the 30 largest metropolitan areas – “in terms of the number of walkable urban places they had clustered about them, then divided the number of places by the total population to find the cities with the most walking opportunities per capita.”

Here are the top 10 cities with the most walkable places per capita, along with the number of most walkable areas:

* Washington-Arlington-Alexandria: 20 walkable places
* Boston-Cambridge-Quincy: 11
* San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose: 14
* Denver: 5
* Portland-Vancouver-Beaverton: 4
* Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue: 6
* Chicago-Naperville-Joliet: 14
* Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Palm Beach: 4
* Pittsburgh: 3
* New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island-Stanford, Conn.: 21

    I am not sure but I think that The Brookings

    Institution might have used the so-called Walk

    Score. It helps people find walkable places to live. Walk Score calculates the walkability of

    an address by locating nearby stores, restaurants, schools, parks, etc. As a Toronto realtor I know how important this aspect

    is. Anyway, try it if you haven’t, it’s a nice tool.

    I don’t think so. It’s a nice tool

    but the scores that the Brookings Institute used are based on a count of neighborhoods and the

    metropolitan population and the neighborhoods are very discrete, either it is counted or it’s

    not. So someplace with a higher walk score like Midtown Manhattan gets the same score small

    suburban lifestyle center.
