FSBOs can be a real pain

Yeah, the following post on the Redfin blog is biased in favor of using a real estate agent when you sell, but it doesn’t mean it’s not true what they say. It’s about selling your home without an agent, as well as buying a home, directly from the owner.

I used to think that “for sale by owner” houses were a good way for home buyers to save a little dough. After all, a seller without an agent saves the five or six percent commission. In theory, that savings would be passed along to a buyer. The buyer gets a good deal, the seller nets more than what he or she would get with a Realtor and enjoys the competitive advantage of pricing a home for a quick sale.

That’s what I used to think. Then I started visiting FSBO’s.

In theory, the concept of going FSBO sounds great. But I’ve met few people who have done it smoothly. Negotiating everything, and the contracts, and the lack of knowledge on both sides worries me!

The concept of “do-it-yourself property sales” is often perceived as easy.

While this approach can pay dividends in many endeavors, it can cost you unnecessary time and money when you are trying to sell your home.

The overwhelming majority of homes that sell are listed with an estate sales professional. In most UK markets, over 90% of the homes sold are listed with agents.

Most people try to sell their own home in order to save the commission, while those who tend to buy homes that are “for Sale by Owner” homes also want to save!

Rarely does anyone actually save money by selling their own home.
