Something to ponder (at ten miles an hour)

Lovely.

From today’s Globe:

Yesterday’s three-hour breakdown on the MBTA’s Red Line, stretching into morning rush hour, was only the latest inconvenience for riders in what is becoming a maddening summer on the T’s second-busiest subway line.

For more than two weeks, Red Line trains have been forced to slow to 10 miles per hour atop the Longfellow Bridge, a restriction that can cause rippling delays on the line.

The T’s response:

People that choose to take the system do realize that with public transportation, you are going to encounter delays,” she said. “What we can do is remind the customer that we are trying to do the best job we can to maintain the service.”

Really? Actually, I guess I’m the most naive person in the entire country / world, because no, I never realized that “with public transportation, you are going to encounter delays.”

You learn something new every day!

    1. People that chose to take public transit do realize that politicians and management will continue to allow fare increases that hurt the poorest citizens – as they have done for many years – but refuse to even average our gas tax against other NE states – because “fares aren’t taxes.”

    2. People that choose to take public transit do realize that that the T can’t prevent “convoying” on the Green Line, where multiple B or D route cars will all come in a row, before finally a C train – that is too packed to take passengers – arrives. (This is 2008 and we live in a high tech economic center – why can’t this be figured out?)

    3. People that choose to take public transit do realize how rude (many – not all) T drivers are, even though they are among the highest paid transit workers in the country.

    4. People that choose to take public transit do realize how this arrogance has spilled into management, including Lydia Rivera’s comments in today’s Boston Globe. What charm school qualified her for this job? Does she realize that many people taking the T have no choice, or is simply channeling Marie Antoinette: let them drive and park if they don’t like it.

Obviously delays and series of delays do happen, but if the top brass doesn’t see how comments like “People that choose to take the system” fan the flames, we are in more trouble than aging infrastructure and equipment.

Is the MBTA saying that they’d prefer that those of us who wish to arrive at work on time drive? From the MBTA’s website: “T riders expect timely service and we promise to meet your expectations.” Aparently Lydia has not read the MBTA’s website.

The spokeswoman obviously is going to hear a lot about this. No doubt the press will go back to her, there will be a media circus, and then the whole thing will be dropped, once again.

Those of us who take the T appear powerless.

  4. Comment by anon | 07/16/08 at 1:00 pm

The quote from the MBTA PR person wasn’t particularly smart and she should know better. However, as the Globe article makes clear, these Red Line delays were not caused by the MBTA but by the Department of Conservation and Recreation who has been lax in maintaining the Longfellow Bridge.

If any govenment wants to encourage public transport then this is not the way to go about it.

Public transport should be made to be supierior to cars to encourage people to use it.

  6. Comment by Design Chick | 07/17/08 at 3:18 pm

What they are saying is that if you want to get anywhere in a timely manner then you need to ether walk or dive yourself. Yep that’s going to work!

What do our taxes go for if not to make public transportation efficient and reliable?

  7. Comment by Kaysbargains | 07/17/08 at 9:18 pm

The government needs to make harder pushes at supporting public transportation.

The amount of cars and smog is out of control.

The amount of delays from public transport is nothing compared to car repairs, gas, pollution, etc.

Wow, I was about to complain about my commutes into manhattan, but I see you are doing the very same thing right now.

Well, I hope your bus isnt using the Cross
Bronx Expressway, cause it was just deemed the worst traffic bottleneck in the entire country. I feel like I have wasted precious hours of my life there.
