Breaking: Historic Bell-New England Telephone-NYNEX-AT&T-Verizon building sold
From an internal email distributed to Verizon employees:
An agreement to sell 185 Franklin Street, Boston, MA was approved last week by Verizon’s Board of Directors. The sale of the building to Kennedy Associates/Commonwealth Ventures is expected to be finalized by the end of the month.
The company previously announced its employees will move into 6 Bowdoin Square and 8 Harrison Avenue, as well as into additional offices, as needed.
No word on what will happen to the current building; it is in need of a complete overhaul, according to current employees.
(The infamous Alexander Graham Bell / Thomas Watson telephone conversation took place in Boston in Bell’s home at 5 Exeter Place which was near the current location of the Hyatt Regency Hotel, on Delafayette Avenue. Watson was a reporter for the Boston Globe.)
(There is a small telephone and telegraph museum set up in the lobby of the Verizon building, I believe; it is open to the public, or at least was. Call them to find out for sure (ha-ha!).)
