    How do you spell entrapment?

  2. Comment by Marc | 05/24/10 at 7:16 am

I am shocked to find out there is gambling taking place in this casino!

Of course there is racism in the rental market… Why? Because landlords are just another group of people, some of whom are bound to be racist. As to the extent of the racism in the area, I can’t speak to that. But before I make a determination, I’d like to see the study data.

For me, I have chosen not to respond to inquiries received regarding my property in the past. Generally, it can be summed up as I am receiving emails from a couple dozen people. The ones who include an appropriate amount of basic information and/or ask intelligent questions are worth my time. The ones who don’t, aren’t. It’s an imperfect system, but it works for me. I guess I’ll just keep my fingers crossed and hope I don’t wind up with a Fox 25 producer on my doorstep.

By the way, if this poor woman hadn’t agreed to meet the producer an hour before she went on vacation (for who knows what reason), do you think the results of the study would have been “We contacted 6 landlords and found no evidence of racism,” or would they have kept going until they nailed someone?

Watching the report had a positive effect on me to remind myself to keep consistancy and ethics as the priority with rental management and also my own apartment building.

I agree with Marc that I do not respond quickly or at all to applications and/or voicemails that I cannot even understand or have large holes in the paperwork. In this “sting” the emails would not have these differences, so I would not have treated it differently.

I have voicemails from people (both white and other races) where they can’t put a clear sentence together. They will continue to be rejected due to inability to formulate a coherant thought. (or was that message from a rental agent?)

The rental market has an amazing group of agents out there that don’t know any laws and are walking lawsuits, and frankly surprised that they don’t have these reports more often.

  1. [...] The results of this study, were similar to a recent blog post I had about a investigation conducted by our local Fox News channel. [...]
