The next big financial crisis: State budgets

Steve Kroft of 60 Minutes reports on the precarious financial conditions many states are facing. A wave of defaults by state and local governments in the coming months will spark a selloff in the municipal bond market, hurting US economic growth and stocks and causing social unrest as governments are forced to lay off workers and cut back on services, well known financial analyst Meredith Whitney told 60 Minutes.

    Local officials are buring their heads in the sand. They are promising healthcare and pension benefits which are underfunded and unsustainable, and we let them get away with it.

    Something needs to break.

    I think they are all going to be thrown into Medicare and Social Security.
