Good luck trying to lure “real” Bostonians back to Faneuil Hall

After decades of basically being a tourist trap shunned by local residents, the new managers of Faneuil Hall Marketplace have finally realized that maybe they should try a different approach.

OK, an outdoor reading room, chess tables, outdoor performances and more artists might help a bit in making it a place where locals will want to go again.

But they really need locally owned restaurants, bars and other amenities that will appeal to “real” Bostonians.

The national tourist-trap stuff just doesn’t cut it – and it won’t cut it in future years as more housing is built in the area and people expect a real neighborhood, not a contrived neighborhood. There isn’t a balance now between tourists and residents.

We truly hope the new managers succeed in finding one.
