Does America Need 8,000 Mortgage Lenders?

The U.S. still has more than 8,000 home-mortgage lenders, according to the Federal Reserve’s latest annual report on the mounds of data they are required to cough up each year under the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act. That total is impressive, especially given the collapse of hundreds of lenders that were overwhelmed by defaults in recent years.
