Faneuil Hall has been a meeting hall and general marketplace since 1742. Many insirational speeches and oratories have been given in the famous facility over the years. Regular government meetings at the hall ended when Boston became a city, however the second floor is still used as a meeting hall and many Boston City debates are still held there today. It is still referred to as "the Cradle of Liberty" as speeches encouraging independence from Great Britain by Samuel Adams and others through the years made it famous and it is now part of Boston National Historical Park and is a well known stop on the Freedom Trail. In 2008, Faneuil Hall was rated number 4 in America's 25 Most Visited Tourist Sites by Forbes Traveler.
Faneuil Hall today is part of a larger festival marketplace, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, which includes three large buildings called North Market, Quincy Market and South Market. They operate as an indoor/outdoor mall and public restaurants and eateries. The overall success of the marketplace in the 1970s led to the building of similar marketplaces in other U.S. cities.
Over the years, Faneuil Hall has been the site of many famous get togethers and speeches. The hall was the site of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's speech declaring his candidacy for president. It also was the place where Senator John Kerry made his concession speech in the 2004 presidential election. In 2006, Governor Mitt Romney signed Massachusetts' historic healthcare into law with a fife and drum band before a specially invited crowd of 300 guests. In 2013, President Barack Obama delivered a defense of the Affordable Care Act from the same spot where Governor Mitt Romney signed his state's expansion of healthcare in 2006.
In 2014, popular Boston Mayor Thomas Menino was laid in state at Faneuil Hall following his death. Faneuil Hall is the home of the Boston Classical Orchestra which has been performing there since 1980. It is still used for many political debates and political shows, such as The O'Reilly Factor. Many Boston area locals refer to Faneuil Hall as the entire surrounding area which has become a modern vibrant neighborhood.
