Are Americans moving less frequently?

Are Americans moving less frequently?
- Regional Concentration: Most relocations now occur within the same region rather than across the country. Households are increasingly “trading one nearby city for another” to find better housing affordability without leaving their home state or region.
- Proximity to Home: Over 50% of moves stay within the same county, and approximately 80% remain within the same state. Long-distance interstate moves accounted for only about 19.3% of all relocations in 2024–2025.
- Mid-sized & “University-Anchored” Cities: Movers are gravitating toward mid-sized cities that offer a “mini-city” feel with walkable downtowns and strong healthcare.
- Strategic Relocation: The “panic moving” of the early 2020s has been replaced by more deliberate, lifestyle-driven moves. In 2026, many movers use “hybrid” methods—mixing DIY packing with professional transport—to manage high relocation costs.
- Housing “Golden Handcuffs”: High mortgage rates have created a lock-in effect where homeowners with older, lower rates (below 4%) are reluctant to sell and buy at current market rates.
- Affordability & Inflation: Roughly 4 in 10 Americans delayed moves in late 2025 due to inflation and the rising costs of both housing and moving services.
- Remote Work Flexibility: The “Zoom boom” continues to decouple jobs from locations, allowing workers to change employers without physically moving.
- Aging Population: An older populace naturally moves less frequently than younger demographics; as more of the population enters their 60s and 70s, overall mobility rates decline.
- Dual-Income Complications: Relocating is more complex for households with two careers, as both partners must find viable employment in a new destination.
Peace be with you
