The Globe is reporting that Simon Properties, owners of Copley Place, in the Back Bay, has floated the idea of building a new residential tower, behind the existing Westin Hotel.

The company is also considering expanding the flagship Neiman-Marcus department store.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino reminded the reporter that any new building will have to go through the city’s permitting process, which could take up to two years.
