Massachusetts suburb makes  Magazine’s 2022 Best Places to Live list

Three Massachusetts communities are on Livability’s list of best places to live in the U.S.

Now in its ninth year, Livability’s annual ranking of Top 100 Best Places to Live in America is based on reviews of more than 2,300 cities using more than 50 data points measuring economic stability, housing, amenities, infrastructure, demographics, social and civic capital and health care.

This year Quincy, Worcester and Framingham all made the list.

Quincy came in No. 49 with a score of 619. Named after the great-grandfather of President John Quincy Adams, Quincy, located just 23 minutes south of Boston, was praised for its 27 miles of coastline, its strong life sciences and financial services sectors, and its educational opportunities. It’s home to both Quincy College and Eastern Nazarene College.

The city has a population of 94,389, an average commute of 34.1 minutes, a median home value of $647,122 and a median household income of $80,462.

Worcester ranked 75th with a score of 606. The city, which recently celebrated its tricentennial, was touted for its affordability and diversity as well as its transportation infrastructure — including a commuter rail that goes back and forth from Boston. It also has a very walkable downtown and is home to three universities: Clark University, Worcester State University and Quinsigamond Community College.

The city has a population of 185,186, an average commute of 23.7 minutes, a median home value of $383,176 and a median household income of $51,647.

The third Massachusetts city on the list is Framingham, coming in at No. 77 with a score of 605. It’s just 30 minutes from Boston and boasts a bustling downtown. It’s also home to Framingham State University and houses the headquarters for several well-known companies, including Bose Corporation, Staples, TJX (TJ Maxx and sister companies) and Boston Heart Diagnostics.

Framingham has a population of 72,846, an average commute time of 28.5 minutes, a median home value of $618,025 and a median household income of $86,322.

Two New England suburbs have made Money Magazines’ “50 Best Places to Live 2021” list

Westford, Mass., and Salem, N.H., made the list, while Chanhassen, Minn., home of Prince’s Paisley Park, took the No. 1 spot.

Westford was ranked No. 46. The town has a population of 25,260 and a median home price of $474,525. Money describes the Middlesex County suburb as one “with a picturesque center that absolutely begs for residents to take a stroll, this New England town combines colonial architecture with a serene backdrop of apple orchards and ponds.” It also boasts 2,000 acres of conservation land and is home to the Nashoba Valley Ski Area. Just under 35 miles from Boston, Westford is also a quick 9-mile drive to the city of Lowell.

Slightly further north and just over the Massachusetts border, Salem also made the list, coming in two slots higher at No. 44. Just 33 miles from Boston, Salem benefits from New Hampshire’s lack of income, sales and estate taxes. Salem is also home to the century-old Canobie Lake Park, the Rockingham Mall and America’s Stonehenge

Money Magazine’s methodology included looking at cities and towns with populations between 25,000 to 500,000 and removing locations with a higher crime risk, low median income level, declining population and lack of ethnic diversity. Using nearly 100 different metrics, the remaining 1,300 communities were organized into nine different categories before being pared down to the final list.
