Yesterday, I had real estate showing, so I decided to take the Red line as the condo for sale was near the T stop.

As I was waiting on the platform I couldn’t help overhear a conversation between a mother and child, as we all watched an airplane fly over MGH:

Child:  Mom why are airplanes white?

Me: (Thinking to myself, yeah mom, why are airplanes white)

Mom: The main reason why aircraft are painted white or light colors is to reflect sunlight and minimize both the heating and potential damage from solar radiation. It’s basically the same as when I put sunblock on you when we go to the beach. White airplanes also helps airlines spend less to cool the cabin and protects parts of the plane that are susceptible to heat damage.

Me: (Thinking to myself – Wow! Good answer mom even though its probably total BS)

Child: Mom how do you know that?

Mom: Because I graduated from MIT in aerodynamics.
