Boston has lost nearly 10,000 of its 70,000 residents ages 20 to 24 – many of them recent college grads – since 2000, according to a Herald review of a U.S. Census Community Survey. The troublesome trend is backed up by Boston Redevelopment Authority research that found the Hub shed 2 percent of its 20- to 34-year-olds from 2000 to 2008 while that age group swelled in Austin, Texas; Phoenix; Charlotte, N.C.; and San Diego.
