5 Things Most Homeowners Forget to Do

Spring is just around the corner, and you may equate this season with the need to clean your home and to pick up messes that are throughout your home. The spring is a great time to start working on your home as well though and make sure that it is safe to be in. Homeowners often forget many of the tasks that they need to complete every year, though they are so important to do as a homeowner. Continue reading below to learn more about five things most homeowners should do each year but often forget to do in detail.

1. Check the Exterior of the Home

It is so important to not only worry about the interior of your home when spring cleaning, but to worry about the exterior as well. It is so important that you look over the roof, garage, and exterior walls of your home for any cracks in the surfaces to keep your loved ones safe during the worse summer storms. Garage doors are often things people look over but overhead garage door repair can be time-consuming and expensive so be sure to check that the garage is working and has no cracks. Have these repaired as quickly as possible by contacting a contractor who you can trust to fix the cracks? Make sure to check the gutters at your home for clogs, and clean your gutters in order to allow rain and water to drain off effectively.

2. Inspect the HVAC System

It is so important to inspect the HVAC system of your home to ensure it is working properly each year as well. You do not want to enter the summer months without a properly working air conditioning system and do not want to enter the winter months without properly working heat. Replace your air filters, and listen to ensure that there are no unusual noises that are coming t the HVAC system. If so, call a specialist in HVAC services as soon as possible to make the repairs so that you can live comfortably.

3. Check All Safety Equipment

It is important to check all of the safety equipment in your home at least every year as well. Make sure that you have a fire extinguisher that has not expired and that it works as it should in case of emergency. You should also test your fire extinguisher and your carbon monoxide alarms to ensure that they are in proper running order for you and your loved ones. Be sure to replace the batteries as well so that you know that the alarms will last you all year long.

4. Look for Leaks

You may have a slow leak in your home and may not know anything about it, especially if the leak is under the sink. It is important to investigate your plumbing for leaks at least once a year, which you may notice if your water bill increases. If you notice a leak, call a plumber as soon as possible to get it fixed and get your pipes working as properly. It is also important for you to monitor your water bill after the leak is fixed to ensure there are no other hidden problems.

5. Pressure Wash

Another consideration you may want to take when cleaning your home that many homeowners may not consider doing in the spring is to pressure wash their homes. Make sure you do this to the deck, the siding on your home, and walkways to ensure that they remain clean. This will also prevent the growth of mildew and mold in your home if you are continually cleaning them regularly. You will have one of the nicest exteriors to your home in the entire neighborhood after this job has been completed!

Homeowners have a lot that they have to keep track of, especially when the spring rolls around and it is time to do the annual tasks. Make sure that you and your family are safe by inspecting safety equipment. Look out for any repairs your home needs as well, whether those be on the exterior of your home, in the plumbing system, or even within the HVAC system of your home. Finally, consider pressure washing your home to prevent the growth of mold and mildew where you do not want it to be to keep your air fresh.
