On January 9, 2026, Compass officially closed its $1.6 billion acquisition of Anywhere Real Estate, the parent company of iconic brands like Coldwell Banker, Sotheby’s International Realty, and Century 21. This merger creates a “mega-brokerage” called Compass International Holdings with roughly 340,000 agents—commanding nearly 20% of the U.S. home-sales volume.

 

2. Challenging the “Zillow Ecosystem”

 

Reffkin is pivoting from competing with other brokerages to directly challenging Zillow. His strategy aims to build a brokerage-led ecosystem founded on the principle of “your listing, your lead,” allowing agents to retain control over their client data and leads rather than paying portals for them.

 

3. Expansion of “Private Exclusives”

 

A cornerstone of this future vision is the push for Private Exclusives, which allows sellers to test prices privately within the Compass network before going public.
