Is Massachusetts the safest state in America?

Massachusetts provides safety for residents, according to a new study from WalletHub that ranked the state the second safest in the nation.

Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Federal Bureau of Investigation and other sources, Wallethub analyzed key metrics like climate risk, unemployment and crime rates in all 50 states. Massachusetts was second only to Vermont.

The Bay State’s high levels of job security helped secure its high ranking. Massachusetts has the third-best job security rate in the country and the fourth-best annual growth rate for new jobs, helping residents demonstrate financial stability. The state also claims the 11th-smallest proportion of people without a bank account and the sixth-fewest non-business bankruptcy filings per capita.

Three New England states topped the list. Vermont took the top sport, followed by Maine and New Hampshire in the top three. Utah ranked fourth, just ahead of Massachusetts.

Massachusetts also had the fewest fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel in the nation and had the fifth lowest bullying incidence rate.

The Bay State also had the lowest share of uninsured residents and the third-highest percentage of adults with rainy-day funds.

The Bay State also ranked No. 1 for its share of uninsured population, it was the fourth safest state for the number of sex offenders per capita, and the sixth safest for both loss amounts from climate disasters per capita and also in murders and non-negligent manslaughters per capita.
