The Beacon Hill doormat

It was trash day in Beacon Hill. Jimmy saw a doormat being thrown out. There was a note on the mat that read,

“This mat will clean up your mess.”

He always wanted a doormat, this doormat wasn’t the color he wanted; but it was free.

One drunken evening, returning home, he vomited over it. It retained the vomitty colors, but  a strangely embedded, odourless image.

Then came the night his ex-girlfriend followed him home from the Sevens Pub, she was stepping on the doormat as he opened his Beacon Hill apartment front door.

Suddenly, she was gone.

On the next Beacon Hill trash day, he placed the mat on the sidewalk, with a note,  “I don’t need it anymore. This mat will clean up your mess.”
