A Beacon Hill Apartment: The Yellow Rotary Phone
The butter-yellow rotary wall phone, was placed on the worn out brown carpet, in the empty Beacon Hill apartment. It’s cord and wires were disconnected and curled around its body.
Per the landlord’s request, I opened the front door, Richard walked into the apartment. His eyes began to water as grief overcame him. He had not made it to Beacon Hill from Cleveland for his grandmother’s funeral. He was not there for the disposition of the contents of her apartment, the home that was his refuge growing up. Now it was too late to say goodbye.
“I love you, gramma,” he whispered.
Richard bent over, picked up the yellow rotary phone, and quietly walked out the door.
