As she looks back at her first apartment

While showing a Beacon Hill apartment for rent, I started up a conversation with my client, as we were walking up Grove Street.

Lisa told me about her first apartment and said she felt  – both joyful independence and serious responsibility. It was my name on the lease, my name on the utility bill, it was are true sign that I was an adult, she explained with a smile and a gleamier in her blues eyes.

My first apartment she went on to say, was in a development in Weymouth, Mass. It was a bland place, but far nicer than the places that would come later during my always-broke first five years living in the Boston area. I was looking for newspaper jobs. It was 1997, before cell phones. I remember a couple hot, frustrating days of pay phone calls and appointments to look at apartments with real estate agents who immediately let us know our monthly income wouldn’t be enough, than to live in Beacon Hill.

As a result, I found a roommate and we both looked farther and farther out until we landed in Weymouth, a short drive from the southern most end of the red line. I remember finding a toddler wandering alone in the hallway, knocking on doors until we found his family.

I remember the little cooking grill we used on our little balcony and the time the neighbors called the police because our music was too loud; and the time a friend came to visit with her boyfriend while my roommate was away and I hardly saw them because my roommate’s room was their first chance at privacy.

Looking back, I wish I could sat I missed those days, but I don’t. It’s nice to hire movers, instead of renting a U-Haul truck.
