Rarely does history come up for sale. It is now. The John Jefferies House located on the corner of Charles and Cambridge streets is up for sale. The turn of the century brick building owned by Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary is available to the highest bidder. The 46 room bed and breakfast was renovated nearly 30 years ago. It has been used primarily as lodging for patients of Mass Eye and Ear and their families. Members of the general public are also welcomed at the lodging house.
In 1824 Dr. John Jefferies and Dr. Edward Reynolds founded the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary to treat impoverished people of the city. The infirmary was once house on the site the John Jefferies House now occupies. It is extremely rare a building this large is on sale let alone in the historic neighborhood of Beacon Hill. If Suffolk University’s Fenton Building on Derne and Hancock streets fetched more than $14 million one can only wonder what this prime, historic building will sell for.
More to come…stay tune.
