Boston #1

For the second year in a row, Boston has been named one of the 25 best state capitals to live in by WalletHub.

Wallet Hub’s 2024 Best State Capitals to Live In report sought to identify which state capitals are the most thriving with lots of economic and cultural values. To do so, WalletHub compared all 50 across four metrics, including affordability, economic well-being, quality of education and health and quality of life.

WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe, said theoretically, state capitals should demonstrate the very best of what each state has to offer, but that’s not all.

“In reality, each state capital has its own pros and cons, and some are among the most desirable places to live in their respective states, while others are unfortunately among the least,” she said.

Boston ranked No. 20 on the list overall, up from No. 21 last year. It also held onto being No. 1 for quality of life from last year, and ranked fifth for quality of education, 15th for economic well-being and 49th for affordability.

Beantown was also found to have the least amount of affordable housing and the lowest debt as a percentage of median income ranking among the 50 state capitals.

Boston also had one of the lowest premature death rates in the nation.

Additionally, Boston ranked fifth for most restaurants per capita and tied for first place with Honolulu, Hawaii; Austin, Texas; Denver and Nashville for having the most attractions.

Plus, it’s attracting new generations of residents, boasting the third-highest percentage of millennial newcomers.

The city of Boston has been honored as part of the Lee Kuan World City Prize. It was the only U.S. city recognized in the 2020 awards cycle.

Beantown received a special mention in the awards for its “holistic work on climate resilience, improving housing affordability and mobility options, and fostering civic participation.”

The Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize is a biennial international award honoring outstanding achievements and contributions to the creation of livable, vibrant and sustainable urban communities around the world.

The committee noted Boston’s climate resilience foresight, urging other waterfront metros to take a similar proactive approach to climate change. It also called Boston a “visionary city where close partnership and trust is delivering significant results.”

Several projects and planning efforts were highlighted in the announcement, including Imagine Boston 2030, the city’s Climate Ready Boston initiative, the city’s Resilient Boston Harbor vision, the redevelopment of the Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building in Nubian Square and the creation of the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway

“We are honored that the Lee Kuan Yew Prize Committee has selected Boston for this prestigious ranking, based on important work the BPDA has led on waterfront resiliency, housing affordability, mobility solutions and civic engagement,” said BPDA Director Brian Golden. “These are the priorities we focus on every day to build a better future for all Boston residents, and it is a privilege to be acknowledged alongside other innovative global cities. As the only U.S. city to receive this international recognition, we are immensely proud that Boston is being held up as a model for the world.”

Boston #1

The Boston Foundation came out with a report a week ago saying Boston could go in four directions, in the future. It could become a “regional city”, focused on providing jobs for its suburbs; it could become a “tourist city”, focused on visitors to the city; it could become a “middle class city”, where job opportunities for residents and quality of life would be most important; or, it could become a “global city”, focused on providing goods and services for the global economy (the world is flat, after all).

Sounds like we’re well on our way to achieve city #4:

Starting a new business these days requires more than just cheap labor and low taxes. The new standard is global linkage, highly skilled workers, and IT infrastructure, says Rob Atkinson, author of a new study on entrepreneurs and president of Information Technology and Innovation Foundation.

The study lists the top 10 states for businesses offering new kinds of products and services. They are in order, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Virginia, Colorado, and New York.

States in the bottom 10 that are not adapting well to the new economy, in reverse order, are: West Virginia, Mississippi, South Dakota, Arkansas, Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Wyoming, Montana, and Hawaii.
