From fair pay to community support, Beantown has everything teachers need to thrive, according to a study from Preply.
The education and tutoring company used data from sources like Axios and Indeed to rank U.S. cities based on factors like salary, student performance and community support.
Boston came out on top, followed by Providence, Rhode Island, and New York.
Boston’s low student-to-teacher ratio (11:1) empowers teachers to provide excellent education to students. Plus, Boston spends more annually per student than any other city in the nation, at $30,388.
These positive investments and Boston’s average teacher salary of $64,049 contribute to the city’s 84.20% teacher-retention rate.
Students succeed in Boston schools, receiving the best fourth-grade reading scores and taking third place for fourth-grade math. Community members also support Boston’s schools: Residents gave Boston a 166/250 approval ranking.
“Each city presents its own set of opportunities and challenges, based on its unique cultural attitude towards education and community engagement,” said Sylvia Johnson, Preply’s language and intercultural skills expert. “Teachers can enjoy, prosper and feel gratified if they are better prepared to navigate these cultural landscapes.”
