Arthur was in a tie for the number one sales agent for a large real estate company. One more close deal and he would win.

He adjusted his silk tie, his smile perfectly rehearsed. For two hours, he pointed out the “charming original details” of the crumbling Victorian, glossing over the water stains and the phantom draft in the hallway. The young couple nodded, wide-eyed and desperately in love with the idea of a home.

As they stepped onto the porch, the wife grabbed Arthur’s hand. “We’ll take it. It feels like it has a soul.”

Arthur felt a brief, unfamiliar pang in his chest. He looked back at the hollow, creaking house. “It does,” he lied smoothly, signing the commission check in his mind.
