GDP and the real estate housing market

I read somewhere that in 2010 the real estate housing market consisted of 13% of the United States gross domestic product (GDP) or $1.9 trillion dollars.

But did you ever wonder how they calculate GDP? Specifically, how do they count the residential real estate numbers?
