Population Projections

By 2030, the population of Boston is projected to grow by approximately 15 – 17%, to a city with 710,000 to 724,000 residents. More than a third of this population growth is anticipated in the Seaport, the South End, Downtown, East Boston, and Dorchester.

Cities across several southern states grew at the fastest rate last year, while new government estimates show Massachusetts’s biggest cities saw only a modest increase in population.

Four of the top five fastest-growing cities in the nation were in Texas, according to the new estimates from the Census Bureau. None of the fastest-growing cities were in the northeast.

The estimated population of Massachusetts grew at a rate of 0.4 percent between 2015 and 2016. Meanwhile, the estimates show that Utah was the fastest-growing state, at a rate of 1.99 percent.

Eleven states grew at a rate of over 1 percent during the year, while eight others shrank, according to the estimates.
