In her article she quotes Mark Melnik, the Boston Redevelopment Authority’s deputy director of research, who analyzed the numbers coming from the assessing department.
Melnik looked at statistics for Downtown (2000 – 2008). Here are his findings regarding multi-unit buildings being converted to luxury single-family homes:
*Charlestown, forty-four two-family homes were converted into single-family homes in the eight-year period. That’s almost 1o%, since there were 481 two-family homes in the year 2000.
*In the North End the conversion of multi-unit buildings to single-family homes was almost 10% as well from 2000 -2008.
*In the Back Bay and on Beacon Hill, conversion were even greater. Twenty-two percent or 31 two-family homes were converted to single-family use over the same eighty year period.
