Don’t run around reassuring people that the $8,000 first-time-home buyer tax credit will be extended. It’s not a done deal.

But the legislative momentum is moving in that direction — with a bill moving forward that would extend the tax credit to military, Foreign Service and intelligence-agency personnel through 2010.

After motherhood and applie pie, our military personnel are the most American of Americans these days, and so it’s going to be tough to stop this bill, or so goes the theory and strategy. The thinking is that it will — surprise! — have more than a few amendments attached to it by the end of the sausage-making legislative process.
