What is Augmented Reality

We’ve seen a number of enhancements to traditional business tools in recent years, most recently in the adoption of augmented reality (AR) as a new form of customer experience for the Beacon Hill or Midtown condo buyer. AR has set the stage for a new virtual world by blurring the lines between simulation and reality. With the touch of a button — or two — users of AR technology can create an environment whereby objects that reside in the real world are “augmented” by computers

The AR Experience

AR experiences allow consumers to form more accurate expectations, increasing confidence in purchasing decisions and even shortening the sales cycle, according to a Harvard Business Review report, A Manager’s Guide to Augmented Reality. It has been used in a variety of industries, including video games and TV programming, medicine, urban planning – and now, in downtown Boston real estate.

In early 2018, Sotheby’s International Realty® partnered with Google’s ARCore development platform to create the first AR app targeting the real estate industry. Curate by Sotheby’s International Realty features a curated selection of furnishings from a variety of brands, which buyers and brokers can use to virtually stage a space. The app is available on Apple and Android devices.

What does it mean?

What does this mean for Beacon Hill and Boston Seaport condo buyers and sellers? As downtown Boston real estate professionals, we know how difficult it can be to see a Back Bay condo for sale in a style that isn’t much like yours and try to imagine living in the space. AR makes it easy to take virtually staged images of furniture arrangements and custom décor from a flat 2D screen into the house itself. For prospective Boston North End condo homebuyers, viewing a space in AR helps break down imagined barriers, affording them the ability to envision a house as their home – a space that showcases their taste and style.

Like homebuyers, sellers can also benefit from AR efforts, using the technology to send marketing initiatives above and beyond. Those looking to make cost-effective touch-ups – style changes and cleaning – can take advantage of AR functionalities to stage any room in their Beacon Hill condo
