Gerding Edlen has broken ground on a new 202-unit apartment building on A Street near Fort Point.

But they’re not just any apartments. Some of them will be super-duper small, around 400 feet, designed to keep prices down for future Innovation District employees. It’s a great idea and most welcomed.

Still, it’s not necessarily a unique idea, if you’ve ever seen one of those tiny apartments/condos in more established neighborhoods in Boston, Cambridge and Somerville. Some are even smaller than 400 feet. The big difference, though: the A Street abodes will be brand new and, hopefully, without the creaking pipes, hissing radiators, paper-thin walls, ancient 1940s electrical wiring, etc.
