For those old enough, do you remember the movie “Reality Bites” with Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke about a group of young adults just out of college looking for jobs, apartments and the joys of adulthood?
The movie comes to mind because last weekend I was working with a recent college graduate looking for her first Boston apartment. She was surprised to find out how high Back Bay and Beacon Hill apartment rents were especially with her low paying job and high college debt. For many young people this means the only alternative is sharing a small three bedroom apartment for which they still must pay a small fortune to occupy.
The reason I bring this up, in a few days I’ll be hitting another birthday, and for the first time I don’t feel sad about getting older. As I look at it now there’s some benefits: being able to afford as nice home with no roommates and having enough spending money to go out whenever I want. Yes, I’ll be reaching another birthday, but don’t pity me, pity the millennials. Big dreams, large college debts, high rents and living in a small space that even a Christmas elf would reject.
