What is climate gentrification? How will it impact the Boston condo market?

I was scanning the internet and came upon a new term, or maybe it is just a new term to me, that am not familiar with. What is “climate gentrification”? In one sense It is like any other kind of gentrification and happens when housing prices go up in an area because wealthier people move to that area. Wealthy people move in and poor people get pushed out.

If weather patterns keep changing this will eventually cause people who live in coastal areas to move inland away from rising seas and displace the people who live there now.  Some who live in areas where there isn’t any water or numerous fires that destroy homes will move to wetter places where there are fewer fires, less smoke, and more water. That is all part of climate migration but will also contribute to gentrification in areas that have been less desirable and more affordable.

No one is safe from climate change but the wealthy will have a much better chance of surviving, thriving, and even making money because of climate change.  In fact, real estate investors are already taking climate change into consideration before they invest.

What is climate gentrification FAQ

What is climate change gentrification?

Experts and local activists say the changes affecting the neighborhood are an example of climate gentrification — a process in which wealthier people fleeing from climate-risky areas spur higher housing prices and more aggressive gentrification in safer areas.

Why Is gentrification a problem?

Gentrification is a highly contested issue, in part because of its stark visibility. Gentrification has the power to displace low-income families or, more often, prevent low-income families from moving into previously affordable neighborhoods.

Who causes gentrification?

The causes of gentrification are debatable. Some literature suggests that it is caused by social and cultural factors such as family structure, rapid job growth, lack of housing, traffic congestion, and public-sector policies (Kennedy, 2001). Gentrification can occur on a small or large scale.
