Data suggests that many Boston renters may want to move, but the top destinations they’re considering aren’t too far away.

That’s according to a study from Apartment List that analyzed user search data. The rental marketplace company’s research team found that 37% of registered Boston-based users searched for an apartment outside the city in 2025.

Several markets caught the attention of these prospective movers, with Providence, Rhode Island, Worcester and Manchester ranking as the top three choices.

Of users searching for Boston apartments, 34% hailed from out of town. Prospective renters from New York, Worcester and Washington, D.C., made the most inbound searches.

Notably, Apartment List based its study on searches rather than completed moves. But whether searchers made the move or not, their preferred destinations remained close to home.
