Boston's Chinatown district is the third largest Chinese neighborhood in the United States. It has a long and unique history and is located between Boston's Financial District and the Theater District.
It is one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in Boston. It has become famous for it's large selection of Asian restaurants and bakeries which draw large numbers of locals and tourists looking forward to sampling everything from dim sum to the famous almond cookies.
Located between Chinatown, Downtown and South Station, the Leather District has, in recent years, emerged as a district Boston neighborhood.
This area is made up of old leather factories which have been transformed into residential and commercial uses in recent years. This area boasts a historic appeal while still offering 21st century conveniences and amenities. The residents here cherish the loft type living options that have become available.
The area has become known for its great restaurants, cafes and shopping options. Since the 1980s, the Leather District has grown as a mixed use area and is home to a variety of residential and commercial properties.
Many new luxury residential buildings are slowly replacing the old apartment buildings, retail spaces and light industrial spaces. Housing developments offering mixed and low income housing are also slowly coming into the area.
Modern day Chinatown today remains a center of Asian-American life in New England. It has become popular for its many Chinese and Vietnamese cafes, restaurants and markets. It is one of Boston's most densely populated residential districts with nearly 28,000 people per square mile as of the year 2000. The median household income is $14,289.
Chinatown is located in downtown Boston and is the only historically surviving Chinese area in New England since the demise of the Chinatown in Providence, Rhode Island. It borders Boston Common, Downtown Crossing, the Washington Street Theater District, Bay Village, the South End and the Southeast Expressway/Massachusetts Turnpike.
